Dr Karen Kirkness holds her doctorate in medical sciences with a focus on complexity and anatomy pedagogy, and supports the Health Professions Education Unit at Hull York Medical School.
She is an E-RYT 500, YACEP and Senior Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance Professionals, and a member of the Anatomical Society and the International Symposium of Clinical and Applied Anatomists (ISCAA). Her recent peer-reviewed work on fascia, including The myofascial rheostat (Frontiers in Physiology, 2026) and Understanding Fascial Tissue on the Molecular Level (International Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2026), explores how hyaluronan helps fascia adapt to load.
She is the author of Spiral Bound: Integrated Anatomy for Yoga, a multidisciplinary approach to understanding how spirality is expressed in human movement. She codifies this spirality as the Five Filaments, a spiral motion rubric based on the multidimensional, chiral, filamentous morphologic constraints of fascia, and trains movement professionals through her Five Filaments Specialist certification. Her aim is to hone the therapeutic experience of movement by "going with the spiral grain of nature".
Karen lives with her husband and their two young kids in the Scottish Borders.

No Pain, No Drain? The Science of Vigorous Exercise, Shear, and Clearing Cellular Debris
Why your fascia might sometimes need more than a gentle wring. Part 3 of a four-article series by Dr Karen Kirkness This four-part series was written for The Fascia Hub to translate recent molecular research on fascia (including two of my own peer-reviewed reviews) into something you can actually use. Fascia research has exploded in…
Wring, Rinse, Repeat: Why Rotation May Keep Your Fascia Hydrated
Rotation isn’t just about twisting/yoga poses. It may be one of the ways your tissues refresh their fluid, gently and within their means. Part 2 of a four-article series by Dr Karen Kirkness This four-part series was written for The Fascia Hub to translate recent molecular research on fascia (including two of my own peer-reviewed…

Meet hyaluronan — the “behind-the-scenes” molecule deciding whether your tissues glide like silk or seize like a rusted hinge Part 1 of a four-article series by Dr Karen Kirkness A river system running beneath your skin Underneath your skin, wrapped around every muscle, vessel and organ, runs a body-wide network most people never learn the…
Putting It Into Practice: An Evidence-Informed Movement Prescription for Fascial Health
What the molecular biology of hyaluronan actually tells us to do — and what it honestly doesn’t Part 4 of a four-article series by Dr Karen Kirkness Recap: rivers, wringing, and shearing Across this series we’ve followed one molecule — hyaluronan — through fascia’s hidden waterways. We met the cells devoted to producing it (fasciacytes),…
